About the Boston Preservation Alliance

The Boston Preservation Alliance is an independent, nonprofit organization that brings people together to influence Boston’s historic buildings, landscapes, and communities. With a broad network of members and partners, we convene, collaborate, and advocate for everyone who cares about Boston’s past and is invested in its future.

We envision a Boston where its diverse histories are visible and where preservation strengthens climate resiliency, supports small businesses, expands affordable housing solutions, and sustains vibrant public spaces. Through advocacy and education we steward preservation as a vital part of Boston’s cultural, environmental, and civic life.

What We Do

• Advocate for historic preservation and Boston’s built environment
• Shape policy by working with local, state, and federal partners and legislators
• Elevate preservation priorities in city guidance, including the Boston Climate Action Plan 
• Track and share information on proposed changes to historic resources across the city  and regional and national preservation-related news
• Review and influence development projects affecting historic neighborhoods, often providing public comment or meeting with regulators, proponents, and concerned citizens
• Provide resources and guidance to the public to prevent irreversible harm to historic resources 
• Engage our community through workshops, lectures, and educational programs
• Recognize quality preservation and appropriate new construction in an annual awards program
• Create opportunities for like-minded people to connect
