To an outsider, a building might just be a building. An object with no meaning. But once you lean in, learn the story, and people connect to place, it becomes much more than just a building. It becomes an item of value. Cherished. Prized. These are the places that become proud symbols of a neighborhood.

This could be a Gothic Revival church that carries a long tradition of standing up for civil rights in America, or a wind-swept plaza renovated to become more inviting to host what it never quite has before-Life. This year, our award recipients all go above and beyond in connecting people to place by adapting buildings to be focused on people and the communities who use and experience them. When numerous stories of our past are presented together we get a fuller picture of Boston and a firm stick in the ground that says this place matters. Our history matters. We matter.

When it comes to preservation, it is the story of people that make places special and this year’s award recipients are central in telling that story.

Daniel P. Dain

Susan Park President's Award for Excellence: Daniel P. Dain

Daniel P. Dain has devoted his professional career to the question of what makes cities successful. Through his law practice and research on urban policy and law, he has concluded that constant innovation is the lifeblood of vital cities, and to create the conditions necessary to foster innovation, cities must be committed to what Dan calls the three “Ds” – density, diversity, and [good urban] design – how to create those urban spaces that will attract lots of people from different backgrounds and experiences to exchange ideas that will lead to new insights and innovations.
