A Wave of Generosity

Let’s come together to create a wave of generosity for the organizations that help Boston thrive. We’ve curated a list of local organizations that combine community development with aspects of historic preservation. It is in no way an exhaustive list, but a glimpse into the organizations bringing positive change to our neighborhoods.

More Than Words logo

More Than Words

More Than Words is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers young adults who are in the foster care system, court-involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.

They are located in the adaptively-reused former Medieval Manor building in Boston’s South End, where their bookstore occupies the first floor and the second floor is an on-line book warehouse. The renovated brick-and-glass building on East Berkeley Street now serves as a unique site for community engagement.

Zumix logo

2. Zumix

ZUMIX empowers young people to build successful futures for themselves, transforming lives and community through music, technology, and creative employment.

They are located in the former Engine 40 building, which dates to 1923 and originally serviced the Jeffries Point neighborhood of East Boston. The site was a firehouse from 1891 until it was decommissioned in 1981. It then sat vacant for decades until foot tapping, guitar strumming, music loving Zumix filled the building with joy after a Preservation Prize-winning adaptive reuse project.

Haley House logo

3. Haley House

Haley House uses food with purpose and the power of community to break down barriers between people, empower individuals, and strengthen neighborhoods. They believe in radical solutions: solving problems at their root by challenging attitudes that perpetuate suffering and building alternative models.

Haley House has operated since 1966 as a full-service soup kitchen with a live-in volunteer staff dedicated to providing personal hospitality to every guest. For over 50 years, they have evolved to accommodate the changing needs of the South End neighborhood and its community.

Eliot School logo

4. The Eliot School

The Eliot School inspires lifelong learning in craftsmanship and creativity for all. Founded first as a grammar school in 1676, the school remains a beacon of arts education. Since 1874, the school has occupied a 19th-century schoolhouse in Jamaica Plain. In 1892, the four-room building, outfitted with spaces for courses in woodworking, domestic science, and mechanical drawing, was embellished with a copper-clad Victorian cupola and entranceway. In the digital age, the Eliot School’s emphasis on manual arts offers a welcome opportunity to learn how to create things by hand.

Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative

5. Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative

Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative is a nonprofit community-based organization with a focus on civic participation, diversity, and vibrancy in a neighborhood once ravaged by disinvestment and intentional destruction. The Initiative is dedicated to promoting prosperity and urban development while maintaining affordability, civic rights, and community voices.

They empower residents of all neighborhoods encompassed by the Dudley Village Campus, including Dudley Square/Orchard Gardens, Upham’s Corner, Grove Hall, and the Dudley Triangle.

826 Boston logo

6. 826 Boston

Housed in the Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute, 826 Boston is a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life.

As a chapter of a growing nation-wide educational network, 826 Boston has empowered over 19,000 students since 2007 through its free writing and tutoring programs. They currently serve 4,000 students from the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain.

The Food Project logo

7. The Food Project

The Food Project emphasizes community building and encourages youth leadership through the operation of sustainable gardens and a dedication to inclusive, community-designed food systems. They are stewards of 70 acres of land in eastern Massachusetts, including in Lincoln, Roxbury, and the North Shore. During the growing season, they plant and harvest crops for sale at local farmer’s markets and CSAs and donation to Boston-area hunger-relief organizations and homeless shelters.

WalkBoston logo

8. WalkBoston, Inc.

Since 1990, WalkBoston Inc. has been dedicated to making local neighborhoods more walkable. They advocate for green transportation, pedestrian safety, and healthy living in public spaces. They evaluate sidewalk and road designs, make policy recommendations, and provide educational instruction about the safety and quality of the lived built environment. WalkBoston hopes that by empowering people to make their neighborhoods more walkable, they will improve their community’s personal, economic, environmental, and civic health.

The Art Connection logo

9. The Art Connection

The Art Connection enriches and empowers underserved communities in the Boston metro area by providing access to original works of visual art. They have exhibited over 7,000 artworks by local artists at sites of critical social services like health clinics, homeless shelters, and safe houses. By building connections between Boston’s social service agencies, community members, artists, and art enthusiasts, The Art Connection stimulates dialogue, creativity, learning, and healing.

GreenRoots logo

10. GreenRoots, Inc.

GreenRoots is a community-based organization dedicated to improving and enhancing the urban environment and public health in Chelsea and East Boston. They manage urban gardens, promote transit justice, and encourage productive relationships between industries and communities in the Greater Boston Area.
