Emmanuel Church, Back Bay

Owner: Emmanuel Church
Architect: McGinley Kalsow & Associates, LLP
Contractor: Consigli Construction Co, Inc.

Designed by Architect Alexander R. Estey, the Gothic Revival style Emmanuel Church was erected in 1861 as one of the first churches built in the new landfill project of Boston’s Back Bay. After two fires and significant deferred maintenance, the congregation embarked on an extensive repair and restoration project in 2003. Repairs to the slate roof, copper flashing, and Roxbury Puddingstone exterior were made; Nova Scotia sandstone elements were replaced; and glazing was removed from stained glass windows allowing the return of natural daylight to five apse windows for the first time in 50 years.  Exceptional research and craftsmanship evident in this project ensured high quality preservation results.
